Laws That Reflect the People
In this assignment, you will find a local or state law (none involving drugs or alcohol) that you believe needs some changes. In groups of 3-4 (folks you haven’t worked on a project with before), complete the following:
1. Notes on your research
This section can be typed or written. Use quotes as often as possible, annotate them, etc. Your research must
include (minimum):
-The original law
-At least 4 similar laws (this can include ones that are working similarly or better than the original law
you’re intending to change)
-Political/ethical philosophies that support the original/new versions of your law - see sections below for guidance
-Research that demonstrates current impacts of the law/like laws
-Research that demonstrates possible impacts of the new law
2. The Existing Law (and like laws)
Identify and explore the following:
A. The intent of those who created the law, including potential biases
B. Problems with the application of the law
C. At least 2 purposes of the law
D. Evaluate and research the current consequences of the law
E. The political/ethical philosophy/philosophies that support(s) the current intent of the law
3. The New Law
A. The intent of the law, including potential biases
B. Possible problems with the application of the law & ways that can be addressed
C. At least 2 purposes of the law
D. Evaluate and research possible consequences of the law (look at similar laws/related laws & their
consequences)
E. The political/ethical philosophy/philosophies that support(s) the intent of the law

5. Presentation
Prepare a 5 minute presentation for the class. You are expected to use multimedia, but it cannot include printed
words; the group adds those when speaking.

A - Creative, unique, explores the human consequences of following the rule of law, includes in-depth analysis, strong research, and engages the audience, synthesized information, unique perspectives
B - Somewhat creative and unique, vaguely touches on consequences and analysis, decent research, not boring
C - Not especially creative or unique, limited research, little analysis, possibly boring
F - Missing sections, doesn’t meet requirements, shows little understanding of assignment
