Bloom vs. Lieberman
Understanding human nature. Howard Bloom & Matt Lieberman on our motivators.
You need to decide which author/researcher you agree with most. I am giving you the primary source and three secondary pieces evaluating each author. You must use the sources I've provided PLUS find TWO additional sources that support your primary's argument.
Central questions: Why do humans create communities? What are humans intrinsically motivated by- love or hate? Or a mixture of the two? How can we construct societies to best utilize our human nature? What evidence are you using to establish and prove your argument?
1. Consider what others (Bloom and Lieberman) have said.
TASK: Summarize as accurately as possible each of their answers to the questions above. Perhaps use one of the writing templates to begin your summary.
2. Decide how much you trust your source as VALID and RELIABLE (it is important to make sure your sources are reliable).
TASK: Check their credentials. (go to each of their Wikipedia pages: Bloom and Lieberman). Answer: What factors about their credentials matter most to you? Why?
TASK: Research how other trustworthy sources have responded to the ideas. Here are some: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . Answer: How do the reviews of their two books effect your thinking about their claims? Why?
TASK: Find TWO additional sources that support your primary source's argument. (Consider where you will look for these sources and determine their validity.)
3. Clearly articulate your position using all sources at this point.
TASK: Consider using the writing templates to give you a place to start writing your defense of your position and a critique of the opposition. (Prepare your points for the debate tomorrow.)
4. Articulate your answer to the questions and be prepared to defend your position and explain your additional research tomorrow in a class discussion. YOU MUST USE CONCRETE DETAILS FROM ALL SOURCES YOU ANALYZED TO EARN A HIGH GRADE.
